Does Insurance Cover Windshield Replacement in Iowa? What the 2025 Law Means for You
It depends on your policy. Iowa law doesn't set what your policy pays, so check your policy or ask your agent; for policies issued or renewed on or after July 1, 2025, Iowa Code chapter 321B says you can't be required to use a particular glass shop to be paid on a glass claim, and the shop must give you written ADAS notice before the work.
A chip or crack in your windshield raises two quick questions: will my insurance pay for it, and who gets to fix it? Whether your policy covers windshield repair or replacement, and what you pay out of pocket, depends on your own coverage and deductible, so check your policy or call your insurance agent. What we can walk you through is Iowa's 2025 auto glass law and what it means when you file a glass claim.
What does Iowa's 2025 auto glass law (SF 573) say?
In 2025, Iowa passed Senate File 573, approved May 6, 2025. It created a new chapter of Iowa law, Iowa Code chapter 321B, "Motor Vehicle Glass Repair, Replacement, and Insurance."
The law applies to insurance policies issued or renewed on or after July 1, 2025. If your policy was last issued or renewed before that date, check your policy or ask your agent how it applies to you.
The law covers more than windshields. It defines motor vehicle glass as the glass used in the windshield, doors, or windows of a vehicle, and it treats calibrating or recalibrating your driver assistance system as part of the repair or replacement when new glass is required.
Can my insurer make me use a certain glass shop in Iowa?
If you make a first-party claim for glass repair or replacement under your auto policy, Iowa law says you can't be required to use a particular glass shop to be paid claim payments or receive other benefits under the policy.
Your insurer, agent, or adjuster can still recommend a shop and explain your coverage and any limits. Insurers can also keep a network of glass shops. A recommendation is just that: you get to decide who works on your car.
What must a glass shop tell me about ADAS in writing?
Many newer vehicles have ADAS (advanced driver assistance systems), the cameras and sensors behind features like lane keeping and automatic braking. Under Iowa Code chapter 321B, before a shop repairs or replaces glass for an insured person, it must tell you:
Whether your vehicle has ADAS.
If it does, whether calibration or recalibration is needed after the windshield repair or replacement, based on the manufacturer's recommendations.
Whether the shop intends to calibrate or recalibrate it to the manufacturer's specifications.
If the shop can't or won't do the calibration, that you should take the vehicle to the manufacturer's certified dealership or a qualified specialist.
After the work, the shop must tell you whether the calibration or recalibration was successful. If it wasn't, the shop must advise you not to rely on your ADAS until it has been successfully calibrated by a certified dealership or qualified specialist.
"Notice" under the law means direct written communication, which can include email or text message.
How does a windshield glass claim work in Iowa?
Here is how a glass claim generally works with a shop under Iowa's law. Your insurer's process may differ, so check your policy.
Start the claim with your insurer. Iowa law says a shop can't contract to do insurance-paid glass work until it verifies you've made a first-party claim and the shop has a claim or referral number.
Choose your shop. Your insurer may recommend one, but you can't be required to use a particular shop to get paid.
Get your ADAS notice. Before the work, the shop tells you in writing about ADAS and calibration, as described above.
Get your estimates. The shop must give you a good faith estimate, and an updated estimate before it performs the repair or replacement.
After the work. You receive an itemized invoice, a receipt once paid, and written notice of whether any calibration was successful.
A note on incentives: Iowa law bars glass shops from offering gifts, gift cards, cash, rebates, or other incentives in exchange for making a glass claim. You won't see those offers from us.

ADAS are the cameras and sensors behind features like lane keeping and automatic braking.
